Fundraising Jog-a-thon Jog-a-thon Chair: Beth Donahoe When: Fall - September 30, 2011 The main fundraiser for the Briarwood PTA. Students collect pledges - based on the number of laps they run in Jog-a-thon. Jog-a-thon 2011 information Spirit Cup Sales Spirit Cup Sales Chair: Diane Burke When: Fall Support our school - and root for your favorite team with the sale of spirit cups. Re-usuable cups with lids - representing colleges and pro sports team from around the country. McTeacher Night McTeacher Night Chair: Diane Burke When: Winter Briarwood teachers and staff moonlight at McDonald's for a night. Students and families come for dinner or dessert - and a portion of the proceeds goes straight to the school. Other Committees PTA Mail Pick-up PTA Mail Pick-up Chair: Karin Manning When: Throughout school year Help collect PTA mail and payments from classrooms. Happens daily - volunteers usually work one day a week. Nominating Committee Nominating Committee Chair: (none) When: Winter-Spring Interested PTA members are elected to this committee at the general PTA meeting in January and help recruit officers for the next school year. Committee members serve for one year (two consecutive years are prohibited.) Legislative Representative Legislative Representative Chair: Paul Dutton When: Throughout year Gather information provided by the PTA council on legislative issues affecting our schools and children. Share with parents at PTA meetings. Rep also attends the Legislative Assembly held each fall. Issaquah Schools Foundation Representative Issaquah Schools Foundation Representative Chair: Beth Donahoe When: Throughout year Volunteer to be the parent liaison for the Issaquah Schools Foundation (ISF.) Site Council Site Council Chair: (none) When: Throughout year	Family Fun Night Art Night Art Night Chair: Katie Yanak When: Spring A FREE family event focusing on the exploration of art. Students and their families create several different art projects - all in one fun night. Carnival - Portfolio Night Carnival - Portfolio Night Chair: Jenna Thoresen When: June Celebrate the end of the school year with Briarwood's Carnival and Portfolio Night. This is one of our biggest and most fun events. Volunteers help run the games, sell wristbands and serve food. The planning committee works throughout the school year. Event is held in June. Pizza Bingo Pizza Bingo Chair: Susanna Stratford When: October 14, 2011 One of our favorite family fun nights! The PTA takes pizza orders for dinner and coordinates the bingo game and prizes. Multi-Cultural Night Multi-Cultural Night Chair: Laila Collins When: Spring Celebrate your family's culture and traditions at this NEW all-school event. Students and their families host tables that showcase their culture, including fashion and samples of food from around the world. THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL SPRING DUE TO LACK OF PARTICIPATION Pumpkin Carving Pumpkin Carving Chair: (none) When: Fall A Family Fun Night held just before Halloween. Participants bring their own pumpkin for a carving contest - without making a mess at home. Ice Skating Party Ice Skating Party Chair: Susanna Stratford When: March 2, 2012 Family skating night at Castle Ice Arena on March 2, 2012 from 6:30-8:15pm. Tickets are $7 and include admission and skate rental. You may purchase them at the door. Variety Show Variety Show Chair: Louisa Pardo When: Spring Student talent performance. Friday, April 20 6:30pm on the stage at Apollo Elementary. Parents are needed to supervise rehearsals, publish a program, make posters and help backstage. Golden Acorn Awards Golden Acorn Awards Chair: (none) When: Winter Annual recognition of volunteers and staff. A committee reviews nominations and decides winners. Tea & Tissues Tea & Tissues Chair: Renee Emerson When: Fall Organize coffee, tea and pastries (and tissues) for kindergarten parents as they come out of kindergarten orientation - usually held the morning of the first day of school. Holiday Food Drive and Giving Tree Holiday Food Drive and Giving Tree Chair: Diane Burke, Karin Manning When: December Annual food drive and gift collection during the holidays. A "Giving Tree" is set up in the school office - where students can pick a tag and donate the item for a family in need. Membership Membership Chair: Amanda White, Louisa Pardo When: Throughout year This committee handles the PTA membership drive at the beginning of the year. We are striving for 100% membership! Meet the Teacher BBQ Meet the Teacher BBQ Chair: Leslie Kahler When: Fall Plan the "Meet the Teacher BBQ" held the day before school starts. Includes planning and food shopping. Volunteers help the day of - overseeing food services, spirit sales and PTA membership. Sunshine Sunshine Chair: Kymberli Nelson When: Throughout year Help show support for Briarwood families experiencing crisis - through cards and sometimes flowers. Gardening Gardening Chair: Kymberli Nelson When: Throughout year Help keep the front planter box maintained at the school. Staff Appreciation Staff Appreciation Chair: Joan Siegfried When: Throughout year Committee members help provide refreshments at monthly luncheons for the Briarwood staff. The events take place during the day, but some volunteers help by simply dropping off food on the morning of the lunch. Communications First Day Packets First Day Packets Chair: Beth Donahoe When: Fall This committee photo copies and collates materials to go in an envelope that is sent home the first day of school. They also spend the first few weeks of school helping to process the forms that come back from the students. This person works closely with the chairs that have information included in the First Day Packets to ensure proper materials and data flow. Yearbook Yearbook Chair: Diane Burke, Audrey Tomlinson When: Throughout year This is an ongoing committee that documents the school year and memories of Briarwood students. Volunteers include photographers, editors and someone to coordinate sales and distribution. Student Directory Student Directory Chair: Amanda White When: Fall Volunteers update our database with student information, then design, solicit advertisers and publish the annual PTA student directory. Only PTA members receive a free copy of the directory.	Student Life Field Day Field Day Chair: Louisa Pardo When: Spring Typically held the last week of school - during the school day. Volunteers are needed in the afternoon to help run the events. Spirit Sales Spirit Sales Chair: Leslie Kahler When: Fall - Spring Show your school spirit. Order your new Briarwood t-shirts and sweatshirts now! Click here to check out the styles. To order - just print and fill out the form - and send a check to school made payable to "CLOUD 9 SPORTS". You can also order online and pay by credit card by going to the Cloud 9 website c9sports.com/briarwood. The order deadline is Friday, September 16th. Popcorn Fridays Popcorn Fridays Chair: Diane Burke When: Throughout year Most Fridays the PTA sells popcorn to students during recess. Volunteers help with popping and sales. Gift-A-Book Gift-A-Book Chair: Katie Breuel When: Throughout year The objective of the Gift-A-Book program is to help build our school’s library as well as foster a love for books and a sense of pride in our library. Parents are given the opportunity to purchase a book that will be donated to the library in their child’s name. Each month, notice goes home with each student who has a birthday that month. When the order is processed a book plate is inserted in the book designating the book as a gift from the student. The student is given the first opportunity to check out the book. Click here for a wish list submitted by Mrs. Soel, Briarwood's Librarian. Picture Day Picture Day Chair: (none) When: Fall Life Touch pictures scheduled for 8/29/11 - during the Back-to-School BBQ.	Reading Enrichment Spring Book Fair Spring Book Fair Chair: Darla Vaughan, Tonya Kezele When: Spring Annual Scholastic spring book fair - buy one get one free. Book Fair Book Fair Chair: Darla Vaughan, Tonya Kezele When: Dec 6 - 9 Volunteers are needed to help set up and run the Scholastic book fairs, including preview days for classrooms and at least one evening for selling books. Daytime and evening shifts are available. Fairs are typically held in the Fall and Spring. Reading At Home (RAH) Reading At Home (RAH) Chair: Maria Bassett, Sharon Tsutsui-Mendoza, Dana Rollison When: Throughout year A monthly reading program designed to encourage students to read. Calendars are distributed to students to log their reading minutes. If they made their goal - they win a prize! The program kicks off in October. More Information Click here for EXTRA CALENDARS Book Swap Book Swap Chair: Jenna Thoresen When: January 24, 2012 An annual event where students bring in books they've already read - to swap for "new" books from other students. Volunteers help coordinate the lunchtime event - publicizing the swap and organizing donations.	Art/Drama Enrichment Missoula Children's Theatre Missoula Children's Theatre Chair: Leslie Kahler When: Winter Briarwood's annual theatre production is taking the year off due to new school construction. Stay tuned for it's return next year on our own stage in the new building! Reflections Reflections Chair: Vicki Hoffman When: Fall - Winter Click here for information on Reflections 2011 "Diversity Means" The Washington State PTA, in partnership with the National PTA, sponsors a state wide arts education contest in the fall known as the Reflections Program. Each year there is a different theme for the program, and this information is available on the WA State PTA website, www.wastatepta.org. The student art entries will be judged at the school (Cascade Ridge), council (Issaquah School District) and Washington State PTA levels. The State PTA winners are entered into the National PTA contest. Bellevue Art Museum - Art of Discovery Bellevue Art Museum - Art of Discovery Chair: Karen Nelson When: Spring Original works of art come to Briarwood with "The Art of Discovery" - a program sponsored by the Bellevue Art Museum and PTA. Volunteer art docents hold workshops with all grades - allowing students to share their impressions of the art. Art Docent Art Docent Chair: Vicki Hoffman When: Throughout year Help in the classroom to facilitate fun, meaningful and creative art projects. Supplies will be provided. This is an ongoing activity - tailored to the volunteer's availability.
5th Grade Committees 5th Grade Promotion 5th Grade Promotion Chair: Teresa Fitzpatrick, Tonya Kezele, Libbie FitzGerald When: June Fifth grade promotion ceremony at Briarwood and then a celebration at Castle Ice. Volunteers help with decorations and refreshments. Traditionally, 4th grade parents volunteer to help - so 5th grade parents can enjoy event. Takes place the week school lets out in June. Also looking for 4th grade parent to shadow chair for following year. Camp Colman Camp Colman Chair: (none) When: Spring Volunteers assist with the coordination of the fifth grade outdoor learning trip - 3 days at Camp Colman. Includes planning a parent information night - and coordinating chaperones. Also need a 4th grade parent - to shadow as chair for following year.	Science Enrichment Science to Go Kits Science to Go Kits Chair: (none) When: Throughout year Science-to-Go Kits are now available. Students are allowed to borrow the kits from the library for a limited time. Click here for more information Science Fair Science Fair Chair: Beth Donahoe When: March 29, 2012 The Briarwood Elementary PTA Science Fair is held each year in the spring, and all students are invited to participate by entering a science project.
